Moment of Sacrifice

I'm sitting in Ohio, USA with my baby girl sleeping next to me and listening to the summer crickets singing night lullabies through the windows. I don't often sit up after midnight... but sometimes inspiration gets the best of me. And inspired I am after making it through the whirlwind of a life we've had the last 12 months. Whirlwind. At this time one year ago I was packing up all the final details for our move to India... just found out there was a little baby growing in my belly. It was an exciting, wild, scary time.

Samuel and I moved to India in obedience to God's direction for our lives. We are simple people, missionaries and evangelists... we are passionate adventurists of Jesus who choose to give our lives to reach the unreached people groups for God. Some think our life sounds glamorous. Some think we're crazy (especially now that we have a little one in tow). One thing I never wanted though was to live in USA. I love America. I'm grateful and blessed to be born and raised in the land of the free... but God told me as a little girl that I was called to go to the people no one else wanted to be around. My thoughts and dreams were filled up with the untouchable ones. Going was my joy. Leaving my comfort, family, familiarity, home... was my joy. Looking at other continents through Western world glasses can be quite enchanting. Mother Theresa said it's popular to talk about the poor. But actually pioneering to those places takes a faith that can't be learned or understood until you're there in the moment, dirty, hungry, homeless, penniless, tired, cheated... I've been there. And it was still my joy. While living in India though, God began to whisper a new thing in our ear. He asked us to return to the states and plant our mission base there... so we could travel in and out more effectively. I had reached my moment of sacrifice. I didn't want to live in the states. Had we missed God? Were we wrong to plant our lives in India for such a short season? No. Had we not gone, we would not have found the peace that we needed to obey the Lord in this new season. A season of great stretching and learning. We are truly excited and honored to be in America. We see missions taking place in a new way. A stronger way. Our vision and calling is the same. We will preach Jesus to the lost in Asia and Africa until we die. But now we get to watch how God is going to connect the East and the West in a beautiful new way. He is so much bigger than the tiny boxes we place Him in. Who are we to think we know exactly how our calling should be? HE is the author.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia owns my heart. Looking forward to having a Gospel Campaign there later this year! It will be baby girl's first missions trip! Enjoy a few photos...

If you're a Swede on the West Coast... Samuel will be preaching a powerful message tomorrow at Pingstkyrkan Varberg. Hope to see you there!

I'm going to attempt waddling my 9 month belly out in the sunshine now...

9 Months

It's been a while. I've been incredibly inspired lately but it comes out in a variety of ways other than blogging. Sorry for the long delay. Since we got pregnant last summer in USA, moved to India and then unexpectedly relocated to Sweden for a little while... writing has been placed on a back-burner. So here is what life has looked like the last 9ish months...

Samuel and I got to spend an extended time in America last summer and it was wonderful. God set us up with so many incredible people and opportunities! We were blown away by the love that was poured on us by so many... especially from our church in Youngstown, Ohio (Victory Christian Center). We also launched our evangelistic organization called Until the Job is Done which focuses on Gospel Campaigns in unreached areas of Asia and Africa, pastor/evangelist seminars and Bible schools!

And then... we found out we are expecting a baby... and then... four days later we moved to New Delhi, India! A city of 23 million people. 23,000,000!!! It was wild! The moment we walked out of the airport we were smacked with an intense wall of heat like we've never experienced! Yes, we lived in Africa for several years, but desert-dry-heat is nothing compared to tropical humidity! So.. we moved into our Indian dad's(Abraham) guest apartment for a few weeks until we could find a place to live. That's about the time the greatest sickness I've ever experienced hit me - hard. "Morning sickness" can't even describe what I felt those first 6 months... combined with the 100+ temperatures, and not finding one single thing that I could eat, (not even a saltine!) I was knocked off my feet. Instead of gaining a baby bump, I was loosing weight and felt totally helpless. Our first trip to a clinic was exciting and scary. We walked into a dark room full of women and were directed to take a number to see the doctor. When we finally entered her office about an hour later she did an ultrasound and said "There's no heart beat. You have a cyst. You need to get hormone injections right now and start taking all these medications" and sent us on our way... all in about 90 seconds. Say what??? Samuel asked her on our way out the door "So, we are pregnant right??" It was chaos. One and a half years before this, we found out we were pregnant while living in Ethiopia and lost our baby... I thought the same thing was happening again and was so afraid. I remember we laid on our bed that week, listening to worship together and not knowing what to say, but we felt a peace come over us. We prayed that God would enlarge our baby's heart and make it strong.

At our follow-up appointment we heard a steady beat coming from my tummy! What a relief! My cyst had grown though. We were soon having our first Gospel Campaign on the opposite side of India and my doc didn't want me to go... but I knew I needed to be there. I went and was bed-ridden except for the time of our night meetings in the middle of a village field. It was a mighty time. God gave me tremendous strength to run around among the unreached those nights! Thousands attended and were saved, healed and filled with the Holy Spirit! There were so many miracles... like heavy rain pouring down all around us but never touching our field... and during the first night, 50 elephants were spotted behind our stage (elephants trample villages all over India) but they never came near us! Even the high-caste hindus were testifying about how God's hand was over our festival!

Back in Delhi, we had another ultrasound and got to see details of our precious little one! I asked "what about the cyst?" and she said, "what cyst?"!! I know God healed me on that field during our Campaign :)

Love the top left photo where she's kicking her little feet up!

Finding a place to live was hard. We found one apartment and the owner backed out. Then we found a second place, paid all the security deposits and rent, and on moving day... the owner said "no" again! We were homeless. I sat on the back of a motorcycle holding a few bags while Sam swerved for 2 hours through Delhi's crazy streets... I was dripping sweat, sipping on a Gatorade (the only thing I could keep down) and thinking about how crazy people must think we are. Who puts a pregnant woman on a one-way flight to a wild land with no home, no family, no friends, no food...... all we had to stand on was a word from God. He asked us to go and we said "yes"... He was giving me peace. We moved into a hotel that night and a few weeks later were able to move into a little ground-floor apartment in South Delhi. We had a bed and a table... but it remained empty for a few months until we could find some things to put in it!

Around week 24

As my pregnancy continued, we became more and more restless about my health and baby. Our doctor had me on about 25 different medications in a few months, many of which were strong hormones. They were constantly talking about preventing pre-term labor. Once she gave me pills to "stop the baby from coming out on airplanes"!?!? I don't know if there's a list of things NOT to tell a pregnant woman... but if so, that has got to be on it! We were praying and sending emails and phone calls back and forth between Sweden and America to try to understand if we were just having a culture-clash or if we really needed to make a change. I wanted to have the most natural pregnancy and delivery as possible and wasn't comfortable with all the stuff I had to pump into my body every day. Since we receive free medical care in Sweden, we decided that would be the best place to be at this time. So Samuel put me on a plane headed North while he stayed behind to finish an evangelist/pastor conference.

I immediately felt like I was in good hands when I reached Sweden. We were able to find out that we are having a baby girl *swoon* ... it is illegal to find out the sex of your child in India because girls will often be aborted. There are 50 million missing girls in India. This is tragic. For us though... we are utterly thrilled to have a girl! I think we both knew before... I had many dreams that it was a girl :)

Week 30

A little over a week ago we found out that baby Strandberg is measuring below average on the growth chart. She is just over 4 pounds and I'm entering week 37 now. We are running tests at the hospital every 2-3 days to check on her progress. As long as she grows on her own scale we will just wait for labor to start on it's own. If she slows down though, they may induce. So we are just waiting to see now. Our actual due date is April 8. My midwife has commented a few times about how calm I am about everything... I know God has given me His peace. I prayed when she was just a few weeks old that He would create a warrior inside of me and was given a word that our circumstances and the dark place we were called to would not have any effect on my womb. Her name (which will be revealed after birth) means lion... I think it's quite appropriate :)

It's been sad not to be able to prepare a home or a nursery. We are still living the suitcase life in a tiny beach house here in Sweden. I am sooo passionate about design, style, decor and sticking it all together in some eclectic blend of cultural beauty... and have been waiting a lot of years to be able to make a home somewhere. For now we have a fabulous stroller and a few cute outfits to get us started. We are living our lives in total submission to God and know that He has so many surprises ahead of us. Even though every few months we have to give away the few things we collect in our temporary homes around the globe... He is faithful to give us the desires of our heart. That's what I'm standing on now!

 Week 36

Sometime in June we will be making our way to the States to spend some much needed time with my family and church. Can't wait to introduce our little gift there!

Little update

Our Gospel campaign in West Bengal ended wonderfully. God's kiss was truly upon it all. For 3 days... we watched tears stream down the unreached people's cheeks as they met their Savior for the first time. There were incredible healing and miracle testimonies too... like a woman whose tumor disappeared from her shoulder, and a boy whose deaf ear was opened up completely after we prayed to Jesus. So incredibly wonderful. People were filled with Holy Spirit too... all wildly slain and shouting and crying on the field at the end of the final night. It was beautiful chaos :) God loves the people of this land and when they experience that love... indescribable things take place. Love doing what I do.

I haven't been blogging. Mostly because the last 5 months of pregnancy have left me preettty miserable. But as my tummy finally starts to peak out a tiny a bit, things are looking up :) Here is baby Strandberg... always kicking and rolling and waving on ultrasound!

Thanksgiving is next week. Wonderful. We are planning to eat at a hotel around here... somewhere serving turkey! It's been too many years without it!! This is my 6th Thanksgiving outside of USA!

Happy weekend everyone!

Gospel campaign

Tomorrow morning we are leaving for the jungle where we will have our first Gospel campaign among the unreached of 4 countries... Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and India! Love to share Jesus where people  don't know Him... it's so powerful and wonderful. Can't wait to see people saved, healed, delivered and free!! Whoo!!

This picture is from the first time Samuel and I met each other in 2007, at another Jesus Campaign... gotta love a man who knows how to preach and pray!!

Keep you updated from the jungle this week!!

Life

Here is an excerpt from our latest newsletter... the way my heart has been feeling lately :)

"Cliché's and nice songs and goosebumps are long-gone on this road to chasing the unreached. The reality of chaos, really hard work, frustration and fighting the enemy is what fills our senses. But truly, God’s great love consumes us in the darkness. When faith and fire are scarce and we’re moving about by the light of the moon... Jesus whispers that He is here, He is strong, He knows and He loves us so much."

It's hard to keep up with my blog when my heart is experiencing all the things it is... and when we have been living out of suitcases for several months. Lately the baggage and hotels became unbearable and we finally got into our own place. Praise God! After 2 apts fell through... we found this lovely little ground floor apartment equipped with all we could ask for(minus the bugs). What's in it? Our baggage of course. And we did manage to get two beds(one for guests!) and a table. Hoping to find a cozy couch and coffee table soon! Im still pinching myself.. is this really where we are digging our roots? This strange, mysterious, noisy, crowded, dark land? I recently heard India described as a place that assaults all of your senses. I agreed. But I do love this place... simply because I love to be light where there is none. I love to bring my Jesus where he has not yet been. I don't live for me, I live so that others can truly find life.

A few lines

The first thing to greet me when we entered our new Indian home-land was a thick, steamy wall of humidity outside the airport. I still haven't stopped sweating... literally. constantly. wet.

Outside our window is a garbage pile from the neighboring slum... it is always full of children and wild pigs and cows... actually every street in this country is full of cows!

Our first meal was a spicy dish of chow mien that we ate standing up on the street with a bazillion flies swarming us from all directions. It was delicious.

Yesterday we took the Delhi metro that is built up over the city for a beautiful view of rooftop gardens... we traveled for over an hour.. it only cost one dollar for the trip.

Took a rickshaw ride alongside a mountainous land-fill of endless garbage... it was also full of "untouchables" rummaging through for food and treasures. Longing for garbage pile outreaches.

Took another rickshaw ride last night and almost crashed several times. There were only centimeters between us and other cars and motorbikes and people and bikes and boys in rollerblades and beggars... and everyone moving at high speeds. Scary traffic. You risk your life just crossing the street here.

Peace immediately floods my soul when I enter into God's presence. It's a peace that doesn't make sense in my surroundings. A peace that says God's going to take care of everything... there is no other option.

Psalm 138:3 - On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul.

Psalm 139:5 - You have enclosed me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.

Scenes of the land my heart loves...

Tomorrow y'all!

Tomorrow!! My stomach's fluttering, my bags are bulging, my eyelids are heavy... but tomorrow's coming and with it, a two day trip to our new home of Asia! So excited to get back to the place my heart longs for. I think it's so fun not knowing what's going to happen... where you'll sleep, how you'll get around... because God gives HIS direction when you MOVE! Many people don't do anything at all because they don't want to face the mystery of not knowing... and then life passes you by and you're sitting in the exact same place, doing the exact same things, and you probably haven't learned so much. I want to live a life that's bigger than me. I want my life to be lived for the sake of others. I want to be experienced in many cultures of the world and be able to adapt to new ways of thinking all the time! I want adventure and challenge. I want to give myself as many chances as possible to fall in love with people and create a family all over the world! I want to chase God's heart wherever it leads me!

Things I'm looking forward to:
Seeing elephants and camels outside my window
Tiny cups of masala chai
Glittering saris
Eating meals on the floor
Crazy (and I mean crazy) traffic
